Pace setter Marquez ‘consistent’, seeking front solution

Marc Marquez was satisfied with his first day of free practice around the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, after he topped FP2 by over a quarter of a second.

For just the fifth time since the Texan track joined the MotoGP calendar in 2013, Marquez didn’t top a premier class session, as Maverick Viñales sped to the quickest time on Friday morning.

But, with the help of a soft front and rear tyre in the closing moments of FP2, Marquez grabbed the initiative back from his countryman.

Still, despite the times, the 24-year old believes Honda must find a way to absorb the bumps in a more controllable way around the 3.4-mile track as he bids to fight for his first triumph of 2017.

“In the end the position is not really important on Friday. I put in the soft tyre. Maverick didn’t put it. But I’m quite happy because I’m consistent and I’m working well with the team.

“Still we can improve in some areas. But we had some problems with the front confidence and also to absorb the bumps. It looks like the Yamaha bikes – already in Argentina but also here – are really good at absorbing the bumps. It is really stable while the Hondas are moving a lot.

“We need to work there to try to understand why. Then in S4 I need to work. There, it is not the bike. We can improve the set-up but also I can improve there, in the right, long corner. Still I haven’t found the best line.”

Asked where he found the extra time between FP1 and FP2, Marquez quipped, “I brake a little bit later!

“But, OK, also the grip of the track improved. Also with a new tyre you gain some grip. But also with the hard rear I feel strong, good, with a really good pace. So yeah, we are working in the set-up and today it was important because we tried all the tyres.

“This year’s [front] tyre, the wearing is better. The life is better. it’s true that when you don’t have the best set-up you stress more the front tyre.

“When you don’t have the best acceleration you stress more in the braking point and you stress more the tyres. For that reason we’re stressing the front tyre more than the others but for the moment we are able to manage it well.”

Fans were robbed of the chance to see Marquez duel with Viñales for the race win in Argentina thanks to the former’s fourth lap crash. Friday’s times suggest Sunday could be another occasion when both men are pitted together on-track.

“He [Viñales] is really consistent but we need to see how he is when the tyre drops. It’s so difficult to understand now. But, for example, I feel like we are closer than Qatar. We are more or less similar to Argentina. And Argentina was good.

“Of course we are working to fight for the win. But I know this year will be even more difficult. It looks like the others are closer and closer each year. And this year it looks like they are closer. Last year I was faster here so we have to understand why.”
