Despite looking very similar to the 1979 original, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a brand new SUV with a much nicer interior and an independent front suspension. But to show you why it’s still shaped like a brick, Mercedes will present it next to a 1979 280 GE, enclosed in 49.7 tons of synthetic resin.

The square block is 18 feet long, 8.3 feet wide and 10.1 feet high

It took 90 days to create, with the team adding approximately an inch of resin to the block per day.

49.7 tons of plastic ensures protection from the elements.

Too bad they used a stock four-cylinder G instead of AMG’s experimental 1979 model.

While most G-Wagens were built in Graz, Austria by contractor Magna Steyr, a few military versions were constructed in Algeria and Greece for the local forces. The 2018 version will also be made by Magna Steyr.
